How to choose the perfect light for your space

Choosing the right light for a space or multiple lights for your home can be difficult at times. There are many factors that come into play when searching for the perfect light, such as the right size to suit the room, how much of the room needs to be illuminated, keeping with the aesthetic of the room/home, etc. However it’s easier to figure out which to buy than one may think.

When it comes to sizing, the main factors are your ceiling height, the size of the room and the scale of the furniture in the room already. For example, if your bedroom has a low ceiling height and oversized bed and furniture, then a chandelier would not suitable for that room. Instead, looking for a flush, semi-flush or pendant light that can be shortened to 35/40cm drop height would suit the space. Flush lights are especially popular with low ceiling height homes due to their ability to light a decent sized room while being close to the ceiling. With our vast range of flush and semi-flush lighting whether you adore the sheer glamour of a sparkly crystal or prefer to add a more industrial feel to your décor, we are sure you will find the perfect fit for your space.

Along with the size, you also need to consider the features the room itself has. Are there enough windows in the room that provide natural light, or do you need your ceiling light to provide the main source of light? If this is not enough, table lamps and floor lamps are great solutions to providing more light into the room as well as add to the rooms design. All of our lighting pages provide a option to search for lights dependent on the number of bulbs it requires. You can search for accent lighting with one or two bulbs to provide minimal sources of light or ambiance lighting, or search for lighting with 9+ bulbs for the maximum payoff of light.

For example, when looking for the perfect kitchen lighting most of our breakfast bar and dining lights illuminate large amounts of light as they help spread light across the work tops and eating spaces in the room. Reducing shadowy areas when cooking allows a safer work space and a more vibrant area for gathering with friends and family to eat.

The last factor to consider is your aesthetic! Your bathroom works harder per square meter than any other room in the house and your lighting needs to be up to the challenge too. As well as ensuring the fittings are appropriate for the bathroom and safely fitted, there are some important style pointers to think about too.

Firstly, bathrooms are usually compact spaces filled with reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass, and tiles. For a softer distribution of light which feels bright and clean without glare, choose fittings with opal / opaque glass or bulbs with a lower output than you might elsewhere in the home.

All of our bathroom lighting are IP rated fittings (IP44+). We are proud to offer a wide selection of bathroom lighting to suit your style. Just as in other task areas such as the kitchen or study, overhead lighting is important to create shadow-free light over sinks and showers. At the mirror, however, overhead lighting can form shadows under your nose and chin preventing you from seeing clearly when performing tasks such as shaving or applying make-up. Wall lights either side of a mirror are an invaluable solution and can also introduce a soft layer of intermediate light

Should you wish for additional lighting above the shower, consider downlights on the back wall to increase the feeling of space. Our Rye bathroom spotlights are perfect for the job. Centering an overhead light in shower cubicles can be unflattering or create a ‘lit box’ effect that minimizes the impression of space. In general, choose fittings that are appropriate for bathroom use as these will have materials that won’t degrade in humid atmospheres.
